Content: Paid vs. Organic – The Basics

Posted on Jan 15, 2020 in Featured

Nothing stimulates heated discussion among marketers more than the age-old question: paid versus organic content – which works better? But savvy marketers will tell you that that’s not the real question. What every business should be asking is “How does paid and organic content work, period?” because, the truth is, they both work, they just work differently.

Organic content works better in building relationships with your brand’s target audience. That’s key for developing loyal customers and repeat sales. Of course, it takes time to build relationships, so the true value of organic may only be seen in the long term. It’s a slow process that involves a long-term commitment to provide high quality content over time.

On the other hand, paid social media campaigns have a set time period and amount of exposure, so their effects are faster and more controllable. The aims of paid content are improving brand awareness, promoting specific things (products, services, and events, for example), driving conversions, and supporting organic content by giving it a “boost.”

The Grind of Small Business Websites

Posted on Dec 4, 2019 in Featured

I recently met with a small business owner and the topic came back around to growing our respective businesses.  He has been in business for a few years and I have been in business for over 14 years, 11 of those full time.  He asked me how I managed to grow my business?  “What works for you?”, he said.  “How quickly did you grow?”.  As I began to reflect on the years, I  thought of the many challenges I faced, as well as the successes I’ve had, but my mind kept pointing back to hard work.

As a small business owner,  you have to dedicate yourself to your business, to its’ success, and to its’ commitments.  It takes hard work, long hours, late night appointments, weekend phone calls, and even weekends in the office.  It’s a grind, but if done right…it’s a very rewarding grind!

As I meet with many small business owners about their websites, I find that they often want quick success, however that is not the reality.  Site traffic builds over time, and it may eventually level off.  Conversion rates build over time, and that too may level off.  Your website isn’t all that different from you in the sense of how long it takes to be efficient and effective.  The goal however is to build something that has the potential to grow.

Why do I have to update the WordPress Software and Plugins?

Posted on Nov 8, 2019 in Featured

WordPress plugins, and themes need to be updated often. Three important reasons for this are security, functionality, and compatibility. Below you will find the reasons and easy to understand descriptions to help you see that even though WordPress updates can be time consuming, it is super important.

The primary reason for this is security. WordPress is an open source software collection and as such anyone can upload plugins, software, and themes. This open, free, exceptional source for information definitely comes with some security risks. If your WordPress software is not being updated on a regular basis, you are at greater risk of being hacked.

Another important reason is that you want your site to function properly. As the internet improves, so does the software. WordPress will do forced upgrades (ones in which you have no choice to install), and it’s possible that these upgrades will break another feature within your site. The plugin developers will then go to work to create a repair for the specific issues and put out a newer version of their plugins. Then your WordPress manager would let you know that an update for that software is available.

Compatibility is the third reason for updating. You want to make sure with today’s quickly changing world wide web – you fit in. Sometimes updates are related to mobile friendly and responsive websites. Updating these items means that your site will be current with the latest technology upgrades.

With every update, you will fix issues, enhance features, improve the overall performance, and stay up-to-date with today’s standards. Your site should be as up-to-date as possible, and all security issues should be quickly repaired to help protect your site, your clients, and you. We’ve created a process checklist just for you. This checklist will walk you through the wordpress upgrade process. Feel free to use this as a guide to ensure that your upgrades are done safely and properly. Website Security SSL

Posted on Oct 18, 2019 in Featured

Einstein was quoted as saying “a Table, a Chair, a Bowl of fruit and a violin, what else does a man need to be happy!” Well, he needs a secure website! Today we’re going to talk briefly about secure websites why they are being pushed and what your options are. You see as consumers, we’ve been trained to never buy anything unless the Website is Secure. However as the Internet has evolved over time security has become a greater issue and is quickly becoming the focus of all the major search engines. Beginning in October of 2017 Google Chrome which is the most widely used browser for accessing websites is warning visitors if your site is not secure…this is a huge issue. It can result in people being uncomfortable with your site and immediately leaving and that’s actually if they even make it to your site. Industry experts believe that over time Google will actually not even show non-secure Websites in the search results. So if you want to maintain or increase your search results on Google you need to be secure. This is your only option.

What others are saying released a recent blog as well regarding changes in the Web Industry stating “Google’s Chrome browser will soon flag every site that doesn’t use HTTPS encryption. Starting in July, with the launch of Chrome 68, Chrome will mark all HTTP sites as ‘not secure’ and prominently highlight this in its URL bar.”

How can you tell?

“Awwww, do I hafta update my WordPress?”

Posted on Sep 23, 2019 in Featured

The answer is “yes and no.” Like any software application WordPress is subject to relatively frequent updates and it’s important to update WordPress, its plugins, and themes. Good news is that we at Mac 5 Creative will take care of this for you so that is where the “no” part of the answer comes into play.  Why should I have Mac 5 Creative do this? Because updating WordPress and its plugins will:

Fix bugs Like any app, WordPress and the plugins used with it can periodically suffer from bugs popping up in the code. Updating the WordPress core, plugins, and themes will fix annoying bugs discovered in the previous version. Nobody likes bugs – they can diminish website functionality, making it unreliable and just plain difficult to work with.

Add functionality and features This one’s pretty obvious. Who doesn’t want the latest bells and whistles to make their website look great and attract more visitors? Go ahead and update. You know you want all that good stuff.  One of the features that have been improved upon is the content editor that you use to write your pages and posts by improving capabilities or adding shortcuts for frequently used formatting.

Posted on Sep 13, 2019 in Featured

“How does my website rank?” is a question we hear often. With so many companies and organizations turning to the web to engage in online marketing and gain visibility, “how does my website rank?” is not just an important question, it’s a vital one for success. Getting found online is so important these days that many firms base their ability to reach and influence potential customers and clients solely on their Google search engine ranking. In fact, recent research has revealed that 93 percent of all buying decisions begin with an online search.

So, if you’ve asked the question “what’s my website ranking?”  you’re not alone. Search engine optimization is both an art and a science designed to help website owners better position their websites to be found, with the goal to appear as high as possible in search results, preferably on page one. Anything less than that means the answer to “how does my website rank?” will be “not that good.”
